Albania bans poultry imports from Hungary

TIRANA – The Ministry of Food and Agriculture of Albania says the country has banned imports of poultry from some regions of Hungary following reports that avian flu had been discovered in the country.

“This is a usual measure to save Albania from H5N1 bird flu”, a ministry official stated last week. For nine months ending September 2006, Albania has imported EUR 318, 000 of poultry from Hungary. Hungarian poultry industry producers compete in the Albanian market using the economy of scales.

Hungary's poultry imports have been steadily falling since 2001 due to the increase in domestic production. Often, importers have complained that the issuance of Ministry health alerts have been influenced by local producers of eggs and poultry resulting in unfair competition.

2005 statistics for the eggs and poultry production industry showed the business had grown to US$70 million annually.
