New turkeys arrive at bird flu farm

Environment Secretary David Miliband announced on Monday night that the slaughterhouse in Holton - at the centre of the bird flu outbreak -has been relicensed after it was disinfected.

It will start processing turkeys again after being given the go-ahead by public health and food hygiene officials.

The company said it would be "fully operational" from Tuesday, as an investigation into the source of the outbreak continued.

A steady of stream of workers arrived at the site on Tuesday morning, with some travelling by car and others arriving in buses chartered by the company.

A Bernard Matthews spokeswoman said: "Bernard Matthews has over 50 farms throughout Great Britain and the turkeys will be arriving from other farms that obviously aren't affected by the exclusion zone.

"These turkeys will be going into processing, and all of this processing and movement that is going ahead has been approved and cleared by Defra, the State Veterinary Service and the Meat Hygiene Service."
