In another effort to curtail it's problems with avian influenza (AI) after recent human fatalities in January 2007, the government of Jakarta issued the Governor of Jakarta Regulation No. 15/2007 on Poultry Raising and Distribution Control January 17, 2007. This required residents of Jakarta who raise chickens, ducks, Manila ducks, swans, pigeons, and quail in residential areas to voluntarily consume, sell, or cull their poultry beginning January 17, 2007. Compensation was to be given for poultry testing positive for AI at Rp 12.500/head ($.00138186 USD/ head as of February 20, 2007).

As of February 1, 2007 people in Jakarta's residential areas were prohibited from raising the previously mentioned poultry. Any poultry allocated for hobby, research or education was required to have an animal health certificate issued for free by the Livestock, Fishery, and Oceanic Office of the province.

Furthermore, all poultry farms, collecting, and slaughtering sites, as well as live poultry markets were to be relocated to areas outside of Jakarta. All poultry in violation were to be culled. In addition, the GOI Ministry of Domestic Affairs followed up the regulation by issuing the Min. of Domestic Affairs Circular No. 440/93/SJ/2007 on Avian Influenza Handling January 18, 2007, extending the total number of provinces that must be free of poultry in residential areas from 3 (Jakarta, Banten, and West Java) to 9 (North Sumatera, West Sumatera, Lampung, Central Java, East Java, and South Sulawesi).

In addition to dealing with its endemic AI situation, Indonesia is currently suffering the effects of flooding in the provinces of Jakarta, West Java, and Banten early this February 2007; while North Maluku has endured a 6.6 earthquake just recently, though the threat of a tsunami has now subsided and all in light of the recent Chinese New Year.

The overall leading poultry and egg producing provinces in Indonesia listed in no particular order are West Java, East Java, Central Java, North Sumatera, and Jakarta according to statistics from Indonesia's Ministry of Agriculture.
