Australians receive salmonella warning

AUSTRALIA - Tasmanians are being urged to return any cracked or dirty eggs to shops because of a growing salmonella outbreak in the state's north-west.

Several local egg producers have withdrawn their products because eggs were found to be the likely cause of the disease.

At least 16 people have now reported food poisoning in two weeks.

A Somerset bakery closed voluntarily on Monday after being linked to 11 of the victims.

The director of Public Health, Roscoe Taylor, says contaminated eggs are almost certainly the cause and several local suppliers withdrew their eggs late yesterday.

Dr Taylor says it is difficult to pinpoint the exact source of the outbreak because eggs from different farms often end up in the same carton.
