Erring poultry farms may be shut down

DUBAI — The Ministry of Environment and Water in the UAE has said poultry farms which are not abiding by rules and regulations will be forced to shut down.

Mohammed Saeed Al Kindi, Minister of Environment and Water, said with the government ordering the closure of all live poultry outlets across the country, poultry farms were safe as long as they were following regulations.

He added that the ministry was keeping them under strict surveillance and special attention was being given to privately owned farms.

“It’s true that Avian Influenza has spread far and wide in most of the countries. But then there are some nations which have seen no outbreak because they have been taking special measures. Though poultry farms are o p e r a t i o n a l a t t h e moment, we are keeping a close eye on them. And any farm that is not complying with rules and norms will be closed. We are particularly concerned about those farms that are smaller in area, run in homes and are privately owned.”

There is a number of such farms in places like Ras Al Khaimah, Al Ain and Fujairah. “We want them to carefully enclose the entire area. No space should be left open so that there is a chance of any wild bird entering the farms. Farms should also stop bringing in new birds for the time being. And utmost care needs to be given to maintaining hygiene,” he added.
