US moves to risk-based inspection
US - The US Department of Agriculture will begin testing risk-based inspection in the meat industry this summer.A new Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) program will roll out at over 250 processing plants in 30 locations. While all establishments remain subject to daily inspection, some may see increased or decreased visits.
Inspection intensity will remain unchanged at roughly half of initial plants, while 25-30% will see more inspections and the same number will experience a decrease. The program allows the FSIS to shift manpower resources as needed, to more efficiently protect the public from food-borne illness from meat, poultry and egg products according to associated risks.
Degrees of inspection intensity will be determined with a two-part algorithm based on gathered and processed FSIS inspection data.
