According to the Government Information Agency (GINA), President Bharrat Jagdeo disclosed this during a recent interview. The president told GINA that his government has decided to spend more resources on helping farmers across the country through this mechanism.

A great impetus for the conceptualization and implementation of the matching grant scheme is the assistance that could be provided for small-scale farmers who lack capacity and resources to venture into large scale initiatives, GINA stated.

"So if they are making an investment we can assist then. We are not going to assist them with money so if you are a pig rearer we may assist with a good boar stock and similarly with cattle farmers to assist with their breeding programmes," the agency quoted Jagdeo as saying.

The president noted too that assistance for those farmers considering shifting to aquaculture is also being looked at.
