U.S. Egg Exports

U.S. exports of total shell eggs and products (in-shell egg equivalent, including hatching eggs) amounted to 202.0 million dozen (dz) in 2006, compared to 203.3 million dz in 2005, a drop of slightly less than 1 %. The slight decline was associated directly or indirectly (trade diversions) with the recovery of several countries from outbreaks of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) that occurred in 2005 and 2006.

Table egg exports (H.S. 0407000040) totaled 55.7 million dz in 2006, down 10 % from the 61.8 million dz table eggs exported in 2005.

Exports to our top market, East Asia, fell to 24.1 million dz in 2006 compared to 30.9 million dz in 2005, a 22 % drop. North American exports dropped 11%, from 22.7 million dz in 2006 compared to 25.6 million dz in 2005 due to a sharp decrease in exports to Canada. Canada imported 17.2 million dz in 2006 down from 25.4 million dz in 2005. Exports to the Caribbean, Central America and the Former Soviet Union also fell in 2006.

Exports in 2006 surged to the EU-27, South America, the Middle East and Oceana. For the EU, exports totaled 2.2 million dz compared to .3 million in 2005 and exports to South America totaled 1.1 million dz in 2006 up from only 808 dz eggs in 2005 (.0008 million dz). Exports to the Middle East increased to 1.5 million dz from .8 million dz, up 87%. Exports to Oceana rose to 1.3 million dz in 2006 from 1.0 million in 2005, an increase of 36 %.

Specialty Eggs

The U.S. Congress passed the Organic Foods Production Act of 1990 to establish national standards for organically produced commodities, and the USDA implemented the standards in October 2002.
