Poultry Workers Brace For Plant Shutdown

CANADA - The clock is ticking for hundreds of poultry workers in the Annapolis Valley who have only two days of work left.

Nearly 400 people will lose their jobs when the Maple Leaf Foods processing plant in Canard closes on Friday.

For Garth and Cathy Scott, and their 20-year-old daughter Natasha, it means all three will be unemployed.

"It's going to change our spending and how we live," Garth told CBC News. "The loss of three jobs at one facility is definitely going to make a big impact. We don't know where we are going to go from here."

The plant — a major employer in the area — has been operating for about 50 years. But it isn't viable, Maple Leaf Foods said in January when it announced the facility would close at the end of April.

For Cathy, after 15 years on the job, leaving will be like breaking up her other family.
