Farmers: Price Hike In Poultry Feed Bites
FIJI - The high price of poultry feed has prompted a group of farmers from Navua to raise its concerns because they are finding it hard to feed their livestock.
Poultry and pig farmer Jim Holmes said a bag of mill mix for feeding chicken and pigs used to cost $5.50 and if the supply was scarce then they had to pay $7 for a bag.
"I'm talking about a 35kg bag of mill mix and we used to buy one bag for $5.50 but for some reason the shops have increased the price to $20-$22 a bag," said Mr Holmes.
He said this huge hike in the price of mill mix came into effect from last month and the farmers were finding it hard to afford it.
The 60-year-old said he had been a livestock farmer for more than 10 years and this was the first time such a price hike was experienced by the farmers in Navua.
"I went to the Consumer Council of Fiji to complain about this unfairness but was told the price of mill mix was not regulated by the Prices and Incomes Board and so they could not take any action," he said.
