Sun Exports Again After 3-Year Break

JAPAN - Sun Group, an integrated poultry business, has resumed exporting chicken meat after a three-year suspension due to bird flu.

Employees of Sun Food International Co prepare fresh chicken meat and processed chicken for export.

The emergence of avian influenza in 2004 halted its raw meat exports. The company has sold an average of 20,000 tonnes a month since then to the domestic market, said Somkiert Tangjaiavorn, president of Sun Food International Co, a subsidiary of the group.

"But now our new 200-million-baht processing plant is completed, enabling us to ship cooked products abroad," he said. The group started exporting about 100 tonnes a month of cooked meat to the European Union in February.

More shipments are expected after Japanese authorities complete an inspection of the group's new plant in Saraburi. Officials from Japan's Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry will visit this month to inspect and certify four chicken meat processing plants in Thailand.

Fifty-three feed mills and plants that process chicken and pork have obtained certificates from Japan, where quality standards are very high.

According to Mr Somkiert, the Sun Group will produce a variety of semi-cooked and frozen processed food for small shops to differentiate its products from big companies that sell large quantities of a few products to Japan.
