KFC Cries Foul Over Cruelty Claims By Activists
SOUTH AFRICA - The head of the Eastern Cape division of Kentucky Fried Chicken has cried foul over claims by animal rights activists that the fast food chain treats its chickens cruelly.Protesters picketed outside a KFC outlet in Cape Town on Tuesday, claiming the food chain “tortures” its chickens by overfeeding them to such an extent that they end up with crippling leg deformities.
However, KFC Eastern Cape managing director Daryl McWilliams said yesterday he did not understand why the activists had protested against KFC because the franchise did not farm chickens itself.
He said the franchise bought chickens from Rainbow Chicken Limited, a reputable company that adhered to strict rules and hygiene standards.
McWilliams also denied that KFC chickens had abnormal weight gain and were deformed, saying KFC had a set weight range to which Rainbow chickens had to adhere.
