Governor Rendell Proclaims May as Beef Month and Egg Month in Pennsylvania

11 May 2007

PENNSYLVANIA - Because beef and eggs are main staples in the diets of many Pennsylvanians and in recognition of the contribution each industry makes in the state, Governor Edward G. Rendell has proclaimed May as Beef Month and Egg Month.

"The beef and egg industries are part of the foundation of Pennsylvania's largest industry, agriculture," Governor Rendell said. "The farmers and companies that deliver safe, top-quality products to our dinner tables here and across the world are also driving our economy."

Pennsylvania's beef industry - 28,000 producers and 1.6 million cattle - contributes more than $1.9 billion to the economy. The poultry industry's 23 million hens produce 6.6 billion eggs and add $214 million to the economy. Pennsylvania is the third largest egg-producing state in the country.

Lancaster County leads the state in both beef and egg production. Franklin County follows as the second highest beef-producing county; Berks County is second in egg production.

"Pennsylvania's beef and egg producers are committed to producing the most wholesome products possible, using sound environmental practices," said Agriculture Secretary Dennis Wolff.

The Rendell administration is committed to creating a first-rate public education system, protecting our most vulnerable citizens and continuing economic investment to support our communities and businesses.
