Print This Page Poultry vaccine vet awarded
AUSTRALIA - A veterinarian who pioneered new vaccines to reduce the use of antibiotics in poultry has taken out Australia's top veterinary gong.Associate Professor Kevin Whithear will be awarded the Gilruth Prize at the Australian Veterinary Association's (AVA) annual conference in Melbourne today.
Dr Whithear will receive the honour in recognition of his work with new vaccines which improve the health of poultry and reduce the reliance on antibiotics.
The vaccines minimise the risk of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and benefit public health. Dr Whithear headed the development and release of two vaccines, TS-11 and MS-H, to control major diseases in poultry.
Both vaccines are now used overseas.
