Campylobacter Cases Down

There has been a small reduction in the number of human cases of campylobacter for most months from August last year to April this year, compared with the previous eight months.

Poultry is one of the main sources of human infection from the food poisoning bacteria.

Poultry Industry Association executive director, Michael Brooks, says monitoring has shown a reduction of about 10 percent in campylobacter levels at processing plants.

And while it is too soon to prove a direct link between that and the reduced number of human cases, he says the industry hopes that the measures it introduced last year to minimise campylobacter in poultry are making a difference.
