Poultry Revolution To Boost Rural India

INDIA - He could be just another passionate septuagenarian, except for the unusual subject of his passion: eggs. Vinod Kapur , chairman of Kegg Farms, is the architect of the Rs 300-crore poultry revolution in the rural India, with its high-yielding poultry stocks, the Kuroiler. ET spoke to Mr Kapur on the poultry revolution in India. Excerpts:

You are among the pioneers who transformed India, in the late ’60s and early ’70s, into the only country outside the developed world to breed its own genetically high-yielding poultry stocks. What did that mean?

Up to 1991, we were among the top poultry people in the country and we had already earned the distinction by indigenously breeding and licensing India’s first pureline at a time when the entire industry was importing grand-parent stocks from the US and Canada for breeding their lines. Since then there are several big farms producing their own pure lines. Our dependence on imports in this sector went down noticeably, saving precious forex, besides creating a bird source tailored for the Indian environment.
