Cambodian PM bans import of poultry from neighboring countries

PHNOM PENH - Prime Minister Hun Sen has urged Cambodian authorities operating at borders to stop all imports of poultry products from neighboring countries as they are facing bird flu outbreaks, local media said on Tuesday.

The prime minister issued the ban on July 1 during the fifth National Fishery Day in Takeo province, ordering Chan Sarun, minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, to stop imports of poultry, eggs, egg-made products and frozen chicken, said Cambodian daily newspaper the Kampuchea Thmey

He claimed this would help Cambodian people to avoid being infected with avian influenza, it said.

"If the imports are still allowed (into Cambodia), we don't know what infectious diseases will spread to our people because our people now not only eat just to fill their stomach, but also need good and healthy food," another Cambodian daily newspaper theKoh Santepheap quoted him as saying.

Bird flu has killed six Cambodians so far.
