BRIDGETOWN - Commercial importers as well as travellers are now free to import poultry and poultry products into Barbados from the United Kingdom. This follows the lifting of the ban that was placed on these products earlier this year after an outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in the UK.
According to Senior Veterinary Officer, Dr Mark Trotman, the Barbados government has, with immediate effect, lifted the restrictions on the commercial importation of all live birds, poultry and poultry products, including feathers, from the UK. This, he said, “is as a result of measures which were taken to control the outbreak and prevent further spread of the disease.
Importers may now apply to the Ministry of Agriculture’s Veterinary Services department for permits to import live birds, poultry and poultry products from the UK.
Dr Trotman has, however, cautioned that: “All shipments of live birds and of poultry meat and poultry products must be accompanied by an Export Health Certificate issued by the UK’s Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA)”. Additionally, all personal imports of poultry products must be in their original packaging and bear an official inspection mark.
