Suspected Cases Of Newcastle Disease Discovered

SOFIA - Bulgaria has discovered a suspected outbreak of Newcastle disease in a village north of the country's capital Sofia, the National Veterinary Service said Tuesday.

According to reports, local vets said Monday that 86 domestic fowls on two farms had been infected with the disease.

The service confirmed that 33 of the birds have died from the disease, while 53 have been slaughtered and burned to prevent the virus from spreading.

Test samples from dead poultry have been delivered to a Sofia national lab researching Newcastle disease for further analysis and the final results will be announced on Sept. 3.

The veterinary service said it has taken precautionary measures in line with EU standards, including halting poultry exports and inspecting and disinfecting affected areas.
