Bird Flu in Germany

As of August 26, 2007 Germany reported two outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 on farms in both Bayern and Thuringen provinces with the outbreak in Bayern being the most recent. The source remains unknown. About 133,867 birds either died or were destroyed as a result of the outbreak. Prior to August 26, 2007 Germany reported 264 outbreaks of HPAI H5N1 in swans, geese, grebes, and coots. The affected birds were both domestic and wild. About 284 birds died as a result of the bird flu. The reports came from birds in the following provinces: Thuringen, Sachsen- Anhalt, Bayern, and Sachsen.

In 2006, Germany produced 608,418 MT of broiler meat, 375,996 MT of turkey meat, and 745,752 MT of hen eggs. Based on these numbers, Germany accounted for 6.9%, 22.2%, and 11.2% of the EU’s broiler meat, turkey meat, and hen egg production respectively.

US Production and Trade

Broiler meat exports increased 32% in June 2007 from June 2006, which was one of the highest total monthly exports in history, due to larger shipments to Russia, China, and Angola. US broiler meat exports for the second half of 2007 are projected to be 2.7 billion pounds, up 23% from the same period in 2006. US turkey meat exports were up 6% in the first six months of 2007 from a year ago, due to increased shipments to China, Russia, Canada, and Mexico with exports for the remaining half of 2007 estimated to be 295 million pounds, down slightly from 2006 levels. US shell egg and egg product exports in the first half of 2007 were 102 million dozen, due to increased exports to China, EU, Mexico, and Hong Kong. Egg exports to China totaled 3.0 million dozen up 217% and 18 million dozen to the EU up 190% from the previous year.
