Poultry Industry Leaders Celebrate Labratory's Renovation
WILLMAR - More than 150 poultry industry leaders, poultry producers, local residents and state and local officials toured the Minnesota Poultry Testing Laboratory in Willmar last week. The lab celebrated the completion of a four-month renovation. No outside walls were moved to accomplish the remodel, said Dr. Dale Lauer, lab director and director of the Minnesota Board of Animal Health's poultry programs. Some offices and lab areas were enlarged to accommodate the lab's increased workload and its increase in staff.
The renovation has made the testing area more efficient for technicians, Lauer said. Before the remodel, workers tested samples on a counter that ran the length of the lab, using two nearby tables for additional testing. The renovation created u-shaped cubicles complete with counter, storage cabinets and easily accessible equipment.
The renovation was made possible through a $300,000 appropriation from the 2006 Legislature. Lawmakers, including Rep. Al Juhnke, DFL-Willmar, and technology supporters like Theresa Bohnen, president of the St. Cloud Area Chamber of Commerce, were instrumental in informing the Legislature about the need to upgrade the lab's facilities, Lauer said.
