Changing The Face Of Supermarket Shelves
UK - The NFU and the British Chamber of Commerce have organised a debate at the European Parliament ahead of the publication of EU food labelling proposals which could change the face of supermarket shelves.for the sake of producers and consumers the proposals must develop a simple cost-effective label.
James Ede, from the NFU's Brussels office.
The debate, entitled 'Food labelling: Communicating to consumers' will take place next Tuesday (October 16) and will bring together representatives from the European Commission, European consumer organisations, leading industry figures, small and medium size businesses and retailers to provide an insight into nutritional labelling at a critical time in the policy process.
Michael Horrell, the NFU's spokesman on food standards, will make a presentation to the debate stressing nutritional labelling must provide accurate, clear and relevant information to enable informed consumer choice, endorse a balanced diet, not add the cost of nutritional analysis to small producers, and not demonise quality food.
James Ede, from the NFU's Brussels office, said: "The proposals are critical for members. Great British foods should not be demonised with the new labelling rules. Also, for the sake of producers and consumers the proposals must develop a simple cost-effective label."
