Bird flu resurfaces in South Viet Nam
VIET NAM - Bird flu has killed hundreds of chickens and ducks in some districts of the southern province of Tra Vinh over the last couple of days. Tra Vinh is the first to report bird flu this winter.According to the Veterinary Agency, even vaccinated poultry died. 150 out of 850 vaccinated ducks in Truong Tho commune, Cau Ngang district and 430 of 7,000 vaccinated chickens in Huyen Boi commune, Cang Long district died of bird flu.
This phenomenon happened last year and in some places, all vaccinated poultry died. Nguyen Van Cam, Deputy Director of the Central Veterinary Diagnosis Centre, said that the wrong vaccines and ineffective vaccines were used. He also said some locations only reported vaccinations when in fact, they did not.
On Wednesday, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development and Head of the National Steering Board for Bird Flu Control, Cao Duc Phat, asked all provinces and cities to take measures to prevent the return of this dangerous epidemic.
The Ministry of Health has confirmed that the 4-year-old child who died at the Central Pediatrics’ Hospital several days ago was infected with the H5N1 virus.
This is the first human case of bird flu reported in Vietnam in the past four months. To date, 101 Vietnamese people have been infected, 46 died.
