US Poultry Situation

US production of broiler meat in October was up 5.4% to 3.4 billion pounds, which was slightly lower than anticipated with an additional day of slaughter in October 2007 versus 2006. For the first 10 months of 2007 broiler meat production totaled 30 billion pounds, down .3% from 2006 levels. The average live weight for October 2007 was 5.61 pounds (+.5% from 2006) and 5.49 pounds for all of 2007 (+.5% from 2006). Strong chick placements in the fall of 2007 and increases in October production led to a rise in the broiler meat production estimate of 9.18 billion pounds, which was up 50 million pounds. US broiler meat exports in October were 35% higher (589 million pounds) than the previous year’s due to a boost in demand from the weakness of the US dollar. October 2007 shipments were the highest recorded in years. Fourth quarter 2007 broiler shipments were forecast higher by 50 million pounds to 1.450 billion pounds, due to the strong demand for broiler meat. However increases in production for the fourth quarter are expected to put downward pressure on leg quarter prices. Cold storage estimates for the third quarter of 2007 were revised slightly higher to 626 million pounds (- 11% from 2006) with fourth quarter estimates at 675 million pounds (-9% from 2006).

US turkey meat production in October was 579 million pounds (+7% from 2006) due to a 5.5% increase in the number of birds being slaughtered and an increase in the average live weight at slaughter to 27.7 pounds (+1.1% from 2006). From January through October of 2007 production totaled 4.95 billion pounds, which was up 4.1% from 2006 and 8% over 2005 levels. October turkey meat exports dropped 1% (53.5 million pounds) from October 2006. Fourth quarter estimates are expected to reach 155 million pounds with 2007 on course to be the largest export year recorded in recent years. The largest importers of turkey meat in October 2007 were from Mexico, Canada, and Russia. However in comparison to 2006, shipments to Mexico and Canada were down 8% and 15% respectively, while shipments to Russia were up 8%. Turkey meat cold storage holdings for the third quarter 2007 were higher at 505 million pounds (+9% from 2006) with fourth quarter estimates to be above 2006 levels.
