Philippines Bans Poultry from South Korea

MANILA - The Philippine Department of Agriculture on Monday reimposed a temporary ban on poultry products from South Korea on hearing the re-surface of bird flu virus in the country.

"I have ordered quarantine officers and inspectors at all major airports and seaports to stop and confiscate all shipments of live birds, poultry and poultry products into the country originating from (South) Korea," Philippine Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap told local television network ABS-CBN News.

The ban covers all domestic and wild birds and their products, including day-old chicks, eggs and semen, the report said.

The department once imposed a similar ban on all live bird and poultry imports from South Korea in November 2006. The ban was later expanded to cover poultry products from the United Kingdom and Japan.
