Al-Meera Stores Selling Eggs at ‘Subsidised Rate’
UNITED ARAB EMIRATES - The Al-Meera chain of co-operative stores is offering a tray of 30 eggs at QR15.75 with a view to resolving the current shortage in the supply of eggs, says a report published in a local Arabic daily.The shortfall in the supply occurred in the wake of the ban on the import of eggs on account of bird flu fears.
Quoting the chief executive officer of the Al-Meera stores, Stefan Lucas, the report says that the subsidised rate has become possible following the decision taken by the Al-Meera board chairman Abdullah al-Qahtani with the concurrence of the Ministry of Economy and Trade.
“It will be of great relief to the public in the current hike in the prices of food products. The actual cost of a tray of 30 eggs is QR23.75 and these eggs are mainly from Jordan and Egypt,” said Lucas.
Arrangements have been made to maintain adequate stock in all the 26 outlets of Al-Meera on a daily basis. The sale is also being controlled by ensuring that each family is able to buy one tray. Each egg bears the Al-Meera stamp and the price in order to prevent re-selling at a higher price.
