Print This Page New Organic Label Cause Confusion
UK - The EU Commission has agreed a new organic logo which will be required for use on all pre-packaged organic food products packaged or labelled in the EU from 1 January 2009.
The NFU has lobbied hard against this logo, questioning its value when other organic logos such as the Soil Association or OF&G logos are already well recognised by UK consumers.
It says that the word 'Bio' may be familiar to some European consumers as meaning 'Organic', in the UK however, it is often more associated with washing powder!
Following NFU lobbying the Commission has now allowed other words to appear around the logo such as 'Organic Product' or 'From an Organic Farm'.
