Print This Page Philippines Lifts Ban on Poultry from U.S. States
PHILIPPINES - The Philippines has lifted a ban on imports of U.S. poultry from two states imposed because of fears of infection from bird flu, an official at the Philippines mission to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) said on Monday. She confirmed a notification filed by the Philippines with the WTO on Thursday last week, which took effect on Jan. 10, lifting a temporary ban on domestic and wild birds from the state of Virginia. A similar ban affecting Nebraska was lifted last month.
"Based on the evaluation of the Bureau of Animal Industry of the Philippines, the risk of contamination from importing poultry and poultry products from Virginia (United States) is negligible," the notification said.
In the fiscal 2007 year ended Sept. 30, U.S. exports of poultry meat to the Philippines rose 59 percent to $19 million, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
