Merial's SAPO Licence Restored
Merial Animal Health has been given the go-ahead to restart making vaccines to protect animals from foot and mouth and bluetongue disease at its Pirbright Centre in the UK.
The Specified Animal Pathogens Order (SAPO) licence has been restored to the company by Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) following its suspension on 21 November last year.
The Pirbright Centre which also houses the government's Institute of Animal Health was at the centre of an outbreak of foot and mouth disease last year.
"This is excellent news and means Merial can re-start the production of urgently-needed veterinary vaccines immediately," said a Merial spokesman.
"We would like to express our thanks to the government veterinary services and other agencies, who are our customers - and to the farmers around the world they serve - for their patience and understanding during this period."
