Organised Poultry Farmers Want Compensation Too
KOLKOTA, INDIA - Now that unorganised poultry owners have been reimbursed by the government, large scale poultry companies have also demanded compensation, especially as greater losses could be just around the corner.

According to Express India, a seven-member delegation, representing poultry owners and members of West Bengal Poultry Welfare Association, submitted an account of losses incurred by the organised poultry to the offices of Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, Finance Minister Asim Dasgupta and ARD minister Anisur Rahaman. The delegation claimed that while the bird-flu had hit the backyard poultry, losses in the organised sector could be higher.
“Our initial assessment shows that 1,406 owners have already incurred a loss amounting to Rs 40.52 crore. But this is just one part of the sector, loss to the entire sector may be as high as Rs 500 crore,” Monoranjan Naskar, vice-president of the association told Express India.
He claimed that while the state government is reimbursing the backyard poultry owners, no step is taken for the organised farms that supply around 95 per cent of the state’s consumption requirements. “From the organised sector, the weekly consumption is 40 lakh birds, around 85 lakh kg per week,” he added.
