CPF Chicken Gets OIE Certification
THAILAND - Two chicken processing compartments of Charoen Pokphand Foods (CPF) have won certificates from the Livestock Development Department, making it the first Thai processor to raise chicken in compliance with guidelines of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). CPF's compartment systems in Nakhon Ratchasima cover 15 farms, and have the capability of raising 5.34 million broilers.

Sakchai Sriboonsue, director-general of the department, said CPF had three more chicken compartments in Chon Buri, Chachoengsao and Prachin Buri that met the guidelines and would receive certificates. These combine 17 farms to raise 7.36 million broilers.
Thailand was selected by the OIE as a pilot country for its compartment system. It requires farmers to raise poultry in designated areas to make it easier to contain virus outbreaks more effectively, in addition to controlling biosecurity.
Thailand's chicken industry had been hard hit from the bird flu outbreak that first emerged in 2004. It has since halted exports of raw chicken and made the switch to cooked chicken.
