Print This Page US Egg Prices Soar
US - Prices of eggs in America are soaring up at the moment. Many producers such as Nancy Smith, co-owner of the Cackle Hatchery in Lebanon, say that they are having their best year ever."I've never seen demand like it is," Smith says. "A lot of people are saying it's the cost of eggs" at the store.
At one grocery store in the Washington, D.C., area late last week, a dozen grade-A large eggs cost $2.39, report USA Today. Officially, the government says egg prices have soared 34.8% in the past 12 months, to an average $2.20 a dozen.
What's causing egg prices to rise?
Just about everything, says Thomas Elam, president of FarmEcon, an agricultural consulting firm in Carmel, Ind. Start with the cost of chicken feed, which consists of about 57% corn and 26% soybeans. The rest is animal fats and minerals, such as calcium, which keep eggshells strong.
