Department of Agriculture Speaks on Salmonella
US - The Poultry & Egg Institute of the US Poultry & Egg Association has added the deputy under secretary for food safety at the US Department of Agriculture Dr Scott Hurd to the speaker lineup for its forthcoming Poultry Processor Workshop.Dr Hurd will provide a regulatory update on the Salmonella Initiative Program and Public Health Risk-Based Inspection System.
The Poultry Processor Workshop will be held May 21-22 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in downtown Atlanta.

"The concepts and criteria detailed in the documents related to the SIP and PHRBIS seem to represent a profound change in the way in which the poultry industry will be regulated. This is an excellent opportunity to get clarification about important issues that will affect future poultry operations."
Dr Hurd has extensive experience in a wide range of food safety and animal health issues. He was appointed to his current position in February this year and before that he served for three years as an epidemiologist in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University.
Dr Hurd specialises in Salmonella, Campylobacter and antibiotic resistance risk assessments.
Other workshop agenda topics include: Green Initiatives: Biofuels and Packaging and Consumer Driven Issues; Water Re-use and Conservation; and Noncompliance Record Responses and Appeals.
