BRUSSELSS, BELGIUM - US and EU officials are to meet up today to discuss a ten year ban on American poultry products from European markets. Many believe the Transatlantic Economic Agenda (TEC), held in Brussels, could finally resolve the dispute.According to the Farmers Guardian, top of the agenda is the EU’s import ban on US chicken, put in place in 1997 because US producers use a low-concentration chlorine wash on chickens - a practice not permitted in the EU.
The magazine says that the US poultry industry claims the ban is unjustified, and has repeatedly called on the EU to review the evidence and reconsider the ban.
Despite a number of studies into the safety of US chicken, the EU is yet to find conclusive proof that the practice has adverse effects on human health.
