TV Chef Takes on Retailer in Bid to Improve Broiler Welfare

UK - Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's campaign to improve the welfare of intensively reared broilers sold in supermarkets has taken a step forward, thanks to a Northampton investment company.

Stockbrokers Cave & Sons is helping celebrity chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall in his campaign to get more humane rearing conditions for the birds, which are sold for as little as £3.30 each in Tesco.

Following the success of his Channel 4 programme 'Hugh's Chicken Run', Northampton Chronicle & Echo reports that Mr Fearnley-Whittingstall contacted Cave & Sons to help him buy shares in Tesco and thus allow him to raise the issue of chicken farming at the company's annual meeting on 27 June.

Tesco responded by demanding £86,888 to cover the cost of informing all of its shareholders. Mr Fearnley-Whittingstall agreed to pay £30,000 himself and through donations from the public, managed to raise the remaining money needed in time for yesterday's deadline.
