Farmers Forced to Raise Prices
UGANDA - Consumers will have to dig deep into their pockets to keep chicken and eggs on their menu as prices surge. The shortage and high price of chicken feed have forced farmers to increase prices of poultry products.At a meeting held at Lugogo on 18 July, the Poultry Association of Uganda (PAU) passed a resolution to increase prices of eggs and chicken, reports Daily Monitor.
A tray of eggs or a broiler now each cost 5,500 shillings (UGX) - up from UGX4,500. PAU further warned that if maize and other grains continue to be in short supply, the price could hit UGX6,000.
Immaculate Nabatte, sales and marketing manager of Ugachick poultry breeders said, "We cannot continue to operate if we do not increase our prices because we spend as much as we earn.“
General manager of Ugachick, Flavio Oliveira said, "We shall be selling our product - broilers and a tray of eggs at UGX5,500 or even UGX6,000 if things do not improve.”
Members of PAU have asked the government to suspend export of food grains especially maize bran, wheat bran, rice bran and oilseed cakes to deal with the current shortage.
