Nigeria Reports Latest Bird Flu Outbreaks

NIGERIA - The authorities have reported details of the latest outbreaks of avian flu to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). Two farms with a total of 4363 poultry were involved.

OIE has received a report dated 25 July 2008 relating to two outbreaks of avian influenza this month confirmed as being caused by the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain of the avian influenza virus.

The first reported case was on a farm in Katsina. Of a small mixed poultry flock, 31 birds died and the remaining 79 were destroyed.

The second outbreak took place at what was described as a commercial backyard poultry flock at Dawakin Tofa in Kano. A few ducks were kept at the same premises. The outbreak caused the death of 1514 birds, after which the remaining 2739 birds were culled.
