Print This Page Unchecked Chickens Not Allowed at Market
US - The city of Portsmouth is standing firm on its ban on selling locally raised, uninspected chickens at the market.More than 100 people petitioned the City Council of Portsmouth, New Hampshire to overrule the health officer's ban, reports TheBostonChannel.
But city attorney Bob Sullivan said the farmers market is on city property, so the city could be sued in case someone becomes infected with salmonella from an uninspected chicken sold there.
People who want locally raised chickens can still buy them at farms that raise them. There is growing interest in locally raised food for reasons including the environment, taste and supporting local farms.
Small chicken farms are exempt from federal licensing and inspection requirements.
