Uganda Now to Export Poultry to Kenya
GLOBAL - Following a prolonged stalemate, Ugandan companies can now export poultry products to Kenya. This is a result of an agreement signed by Kenya's High Commissioner, Japheth Getugi and Uganda's state minister for trade, Nelson Gagawala, in Kampala recently, reports All Africa.
The agreement was signed after a two-day meeting held to discuss trade impediments between the two countries.
According to the agreement, Ugachick Limited and Biyinzika Farmers can export day-old chicks. However, this must be done through appointed Kenyan agents.
A source said Ugandan firms had complained about the difficulties in exporting day-old chicks, eggs and other poultry products to Kenya. The firms also complained about the delays in acquiring transit permits to export poultry products to Burundi and Rwanda through Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
They noted that the process took two weeks, adding that Ugandan exporters had opted to transit through Rwanda.
At the meeting, delegates also discussed Uganda's ban on the importation of poultry and meat products. The two countries agreed to initiate a joint committee to gather information for reviewing the lifting of the ban.
