Scottish College Introduces New Poultry Course

SCOTLAND - Scottish Agricultural College (SAC) has launched a new Higher National Certificate (HNC) course in poultry production aimed at meeting the recruitment needs of the poultry sector.

The award of HNC Poultry Production has been designed to meet the demands and requirements for employment in the poultry industry, explained Lorraine Hannah, lecturer/adviser of studies at Scottish Agricultural College at Auchincruive, Ayr. It has also been designed to prepare for further vocational training to develop and advance a career in this dynamic sector.

The course is suitable for a wide range of candidates including: school-leavers, those returning to education, those in employment who wish to enhance their career prospects, those seeking a change in career or part-time candidates wishing to broaden their skills and knowledge.

The course is structured over one year of full-time study, or can also be taken on a part-time basis (normally over 2 years, i.e. 6 Units per academic session). It is delivered using a range of teaching and learning methods such as lectures, practical classes and tutorials, with farm/industry visits to supplement these college-based activities.

Course Units

There are 12 mandatory course units, covering the range of skills and knowledge needed by today's poultry industry: Poultry Meat Production Systems Poultry Egg Production Systems Poultry Health Poultry Welfare and Behaviour Poultry Nutrition and Feed Formulation Avian Physiology Production and Incubation of Hatching Eggs Poultry Buildings and Mechanisation Pollution and Waste Management - an Introduction Business Management - an Introduction Information Technology Applications Software 1 Graded Unit (project)

How to Apply for HNC Poultry Production

To apply for full-time study of HNC Poultry Production, you must make an application through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS).

For part-time study, applicants should go direct to the SAC. The application form can be downloaded from the SAC web site, or contact SAC for a paper copy.

Fees

For students from the UK or EU, the cost is £1,255, or £7,400 for overseas students.
