OIE Receives Two More AI Reports
GLOBAL - Two reports relating to bird flu have reached World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) in the last week. Neither of the reports - from the Dominican Republic and the United Kingdom - relate to new outbreaks.
The report from the UK relates to an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza caused by the H7N7 viral strain. There was just one outbreak - in a layer flock at Shenington in Oxfordshire - which started as a mild clinical disease in early May this year. Around 10,000 birds died as the clinical symptoms worsened and the remaining 15,000 hens were destroyed. There have been no further cases in the country since the initial outbreak.
The Dominican Republic reported its first cases of low pathogenic bird flu in December 2007. The cause was identified as the H5N2 virus. Two outbreaks involving 130 birds took place in December 2007. This was followed by four outbreaks involving 475 birds in January 2008 and a third report in February 2008 covered another five outbreaks involving 266 birds - backyard flocks and fighting cocks. There were no new outbreaks in the most recent report sent to OIE at the end of August 2008.
