Print This Page Town Rallies Against Proposed Chicken Hatchery
WASHINGTON STATE - Residents of the small town of Nooksack are up in arms over a Canadian company's proposal to build a chicken hatchery near residential developments. The Bellingham Herald reports that Rock Creek Farms - based in Abbotsford, British Columbia - wants to build a 15,000-square-foot hatchery on commercial-zoned land.
The small, wholesome food company says it will be good for the town, providing jobs and taxes. The City Council must approve a conditional-use permit for the project.
But residents are not convinced it is a good thing. They are concerned about smell, noise and traffic. The Sumas River Estates Homeowners Association submitted a petition signed by 20 property-owners opposing the hatchery. Sumas River Estates is right across the road from the property.
