HUNGARY - Hungerit, one of the country's biggest poultry companies, has halted production of fattened goose products under pressure from Austrian animal rights organisation, Four Paws.Hungerit CEO József Magyar explained that the company had decided to discontinue all of its fattened goose products in September because of high feed prices, the strong forint and the campaign by Four Paws, which considers force-feeding the geese to enlarge their livers unethical. The statement was reported by BBJ, citing MTI-Econews.
Hungerit will try to replace its fattened goose capacity by raising more geese that are not force-fed as well as more ducks. However, the company will still be forced to lay off 200 staff by year-end, Mr Magyar said. The company has about 2,000 staff.
