Pakistan Free of Bird Flu

PAKISTAN - The authorities have notified the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) that there have been no outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) since June 2008.

In their latest report (dated 25 September), the Pakistani veterinary authorities referred to one outbreak of HPAI caused by the H5N1 virus in the North West Frontier region in June. Four thousand birds in the commercial broiler flock died, and the remaining 2000 were destroyed on 19 June 2008. Disinfection was completed on 22 June 2008. All serosurveillance results obtained within a 10km-radius zone around the outbreak area were negative. Monitoring and serosurveillance will continue.

Since there have been no further outbreaks in the country since 19 June 2008, Pakistan has declared itself free of HPAI with effect from 22 September 2008.
