International Egg and Poultry Review
US - By the USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS). This is a weekly report looking at international developments concerning the poultry industry. This week's report covers the poultry situation and outlook in Mexico.
Mexico
Domestic broiler and turkey meat production is forecast to rise in 2009, however slower growth rates are expected due to higher international grain costs, of which 60% of Mexico’s grain imports are sorghum and yellow corn since it is historically a white corn producer and cannot supply all of its domestic needs, and increased competition with poultry meat imports from the US and Chile. Broiler meat consumption is forecast to slow in 2009, due to higher prices, while turkey meat consumption is expected to rise to 227,000 MT. Poultry meat import decreases in 2008 were attributed to higher international chicken prices and a quarantine Mexico placed on the state of Arkansas in the US in June 2008, which was revised in July 2008 to allow imports of mechanically separated poultry meat and boneless chicken cuts destined to Mexico’s meat processing industry with the exception of product from Washington County. Imports of chicken and turkey cuts (mainly leg quarters, MSC, thigh meat, and MST) are forecast to increase in 2009 due to good demand by the cold-cut and meat processing industry.
