Inghams Poultry has occupied to top spot in the Australian poultry market for many years, controlling 30 per cent of market share, according to Farming UK.

But Inghams could soon be pushed out of the number one position. There is now a proposed takeover of the Bartter/Steggles poultry group, the country's second largest processors, by Baiada Chickens, that will give the new merged company 35 per cent of market share.

The poultry industry in Australia is valued at close to US$2 billion a year. The poultry trade is still controlled by family companies, not multinationals.
