Three New Bird Flu Outbreaks in Bangladesh

BANGLADESH - The veterinary authorities have reported three new cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

The veterinary authorities in Bangladesh sent Follow On Report No. 11 to OIE on 22 January 2009 covering three new cases of HPAI in different areas of the country.

The first case was at a commercial farm in Mirpur, Dhaka. Of the 5341 suscpetible birds, 112 died and the remaining 5229 were destroyed.

The second case was in a backyard flock at Mogolbasa, near Kurigram in Rajshahi district. There were 11 birds affected from a flock of 736. All the remaining birds were destroyed.

The third case was at another commercial farm at Banskhali, near Chittagong. There were 80 birds affected in a flock of 1800 birds. All the remaining birds were destroyed.

The H5N1 virus has been confirmed.
