Poultry Farms Eyed In E. coli Outbreak
OKLAHOMA, US - Chicken DNA has been found in the water wells at Locust Grove, centre of last year's outbreak of E. coli food poisoning.Oklahoma's Attorney General's Office said poultry farms may have caused last year's deadly E. coli outbreak in the northeast part of the state, according to KOCO.
Poultry DNA was found in samples taken from well water used by the Country Cottage Restaurant in Locust Grove. The restaurant and its private wells were considered the epicenter of the outbreak.
Investigators said poultry litter was spread on nearby fields and the waste may have washed into the water supply.
Workers plan to conduct more tests on private wells in Locust Grove next week. The Attorney General's Office said it is possible that wells in the area are still contaminated.
One person died and more than 200 other people became sick during the outbreak last summer, says KOCO.
