Hong Kong Reports Ten Cases of Bird Flu

HONG KONG - The veterinary authorities have sent an Immediate Notification to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) regarding ten outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) involving a total of 12 birds.

The veterinary authorities in Hong Kong sent the report, dated 13 February to OIE, covering a total of ten outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).

The first outbreak was on 29 January and involved one goose and one duck, found dead on a beach at Sha Lo Wan. Two days later, another dead duck was found at the same location, followed by one dead chicken on 2 February.

In the following days, three chickens and two ducks were found dead around Hong Kong, making a total of nine poultry. In addition, three wild birds were affected: a grey heron, a peregrine falcon and a crow. All the birds had died.

The most recent case was reported on 4 February.

The presence of the H5N1 sub-type of the HPAI virus has been confirmed.
