Poultry Price Rockets Upwards

23 February 2009

PAKISTAN - Poultry prices have jumped by 50 rupees per kilo in a matter of days.

Poultry prices have witnessed a jump of around 50 rupees (PKR) per kilo within a week, according to The Nation. Chicken prices have reached PKR 170 from PKR 120 during the period on the back of prevailing massive demand and supply gap in the market.

The All Pakistan Poultry Association (APPA) has fixed the live bird wholesale price at PKR 106, while the product would be on retail sale for PKR 112. The chicken meat price has been set at PKR 167 per kilo. The prices of table eggs would be PKR 1,590 for a box of 360 eggs, whereas the retail price would be PKR 55 per dozen.

During the survey conducted by The Nation, chicken meat was available at most of the markets and bazaars at PKR 170 to 180, instead of PKR 167 fixed by the poultry association. The same product was offered at PKR 120 per kilo last week.

Market sources said that poultry traders had their own way of charging the rate in their respective areas and they do not bother to follow the rates fixed by the poultry association.

Major Javed Bukhari of the Pakistan Poultry Association attributed this unprecedented rise in chicken rates to the prevailing gap between strong demand and supply, which is pushing prices beyond the purchasing power of many consumers, according The Nation.
